Washington
Wizards forward Paul Pierce passed Hall of Famer Jerry
West—whose silhouette is incorporated into
the NBA logo—for 17th place on the NBA's list of all-time leading scorers in Tuesday's 106-102 loss to the
visiting Atlanta Hawks at the Verizon Center. Pierce, the longtime Boston Celtic and former Finals MVP,
posted 14 points overall on 6-of-16 shooting from the field in the defeat.
Pierce
spent the first 15 years of his Hall of Fame career in Boston, where he
accumulated 24,021 points and averaged 21.8 per contest. In his lone season
in Brooklyn—where he was traded in the 2013 offseason—Pierce averaged a
career-low 13.5 points per game with 1,010 points collected total as a member
of the Nets. Pierce is the only
active player (and one of six in league history) to have scored 1,000 points in
15 consecutive seasons. The only season Pierce failed to score 1,000
was his rookie year—the NBA lockout-condensed 50-game 1998-1999 season.
Signing
with the Wizards this summer, Pierce has helped lead Washington to a 9-4 start—the
franchise's best 13-game start since the 1974-1975 season.
Pierce is
on pace to reach another scoring milestone in the near future. He
needs just 78 points to leapfrog Reggie
Miller for the No. 16 spot on the all-time scoring list.
